Rebecca Frels, formerly the Chair of the Department of Counseling, has been appointed as Associate Dean of the College of Education and Human Development. With a background in counseling as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Play Therapist, and LPC-Supervisor in Texas, her experience spans the mental health community and school settings. She is a graduate of the University of Houston with a B.A. in Music; University of Houston Victoria with a M.Ed. in Counseling; and Sam Houston State University with a Ph.D. in Counseling and Supervision.
Beginning with her dissertation research in 2010, her scholarship has focused on interdisciplinary work and mentoring in schools. Her research and scholarly writing also includes research methodology, counselor supervision, play therapy and creative arts. She has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, four book chapters/book(s), and has presented on the international, national, and local levels in all of her research areas—including workshops for the Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. These international experiences influenced her model for cross-cultural mentoring and her book Seven Steps to a Comprehensive Literature Review: A multi-model and cultural approach. Her h-index is 12 with highest citations (n = 210) for the 2013 article: Administering Quantitative Instruments with Qualitative Interviews: A Mixed Research Approach published by the Journal of Counseling & Development.
Dr. Frels is a past recipient of the 91自拍论坛 Merit Award in recognition of outstanding teaching. Other honors and awards include membership in Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society Beta Xi Chapter; two Distinguished Paper Awards at the American Educational Research Association; Most Read Article in 2014 from Routledge Taylor & Francis Group’s journal Mentoring & Tutoring; Outstanding Paper Award from the Southern Educational Research Association, and a Texas Counseling Association Distinguished Service Award.
Most recently, Dr. Frels was awarded a $1.9 million-dollar grant sponsored by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to initiate a mentoring program to provide training in crisis services using adult-peer mentors in the schools with school counseling interns. The program, Interdisciplinary Mentoring Partners and Crisis Teams (IMPaCT), is an integrated-care approach to mental health for children, adolescents, and transitional-age youth in Southeast Texas. Grant funding also includes a 2-year grant funded at $150,000 with Minority Health Research and Education of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to co-develop an inventive peer-led program to target recruitment of underrepresented minorities in the Speech and Hearing Professions at 91自拍论坛.
Dr. Frels has been a part of the 91自拍论坛 family since Spring 2011 when she was lead faculty in teaching the first cohort of the 91自拍论坛 School Counseling Online Program. Since that time, she has helped lead the effort to establish new programs and degrees including the CACREP accredited M.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health; the M.Ed. in Special Education with the concentration of Educational Diagnostician; and the Certificate Program in Mental Health Counseling. In her free time, she enjoys classical, Broadway musicals, tennis, and “foodie” cuisine.
