2:00pm - 3:00pm: Socially Distanced: Mental Health and Suicide Prevention During a Pandemic
The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as a new global health threat. By increasing the risk of isolation, fear, stigma, abuse, and economic fallout, COVID-19 has led to increasing the risk of psychiatric disorders, chronic trauma and stress, which eventually increases suicidality and suicidal behavior. COVID-19 has touched every aspect of human life and has exposed and exacerbated how people cope and deal with mental wellbeing during a worldwide health crisis. This presentation will cover recent statistics associated with the uptake in mental health issues during COVID-19 specifically surrounding suicide, ways to manage increased stress for suicide prevention, and special considerations of suicide prevention during a pandemic.
