Degree Description

The Department of Nutrition, Hospitality and Human Services, in collaboration with the Department of Health and Kinesiology, offers the Master of Science in Nutrition – Sport Nutrition degree. The degree is 30 hours and 100% online. Through the collaboration of two departments, the goal of the sport nutrition concentration is to provide students with advanced education and practice application with a focus on the relationship between nutrition and exercise science to impact sport performance.

This unique concentration joins two fields: nutrition and exercise science to build upon foundation knowledge in each of the respective background areas. The degree prepares you to work with athletes and others involved in sports and fitness to develop a dietary plan that best helps optimize their performance using scientific evidence practices and recommendations.

This concentration is designed for those holding a bachelor's or master's degree in nutrition or exercise science, registered dietitian nutritionists, nutritionists and certified personal trainers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered dietitian nutritionist job outlooks are expected to increase by 7% over the next 10 years, respectively.

Job market demand will occur at all levels, including the community, collegiate and professional levels. The sport nutrition field has increased considerably over the last several years. Additionally, due to the rising health crisis in the nation, there is increasing awareness of nutritional needs and physical activity to support a healthy lifestyle.

Admission requirements: applicants must have a bachelor's degree in nutrition or exercise science from an accredited university or college and have an undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or higher GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Counseling and educating sporting teams and/or individual athletes on daily nutrition to enhance the performance of competitive and recreational athletes.
