91自拍论坛 marked Earth Day on Tuesday with a laid-back celebration on the Dining Hall lawn, bringing together students, campus groups and local organizations for an afternoon of hands-on activities and environmental outreach.
Hosted by the LU Sustainability Committee and the LU Green Squad, the event featured music from a live DJ, solar-powered smoothies and tables from environmental and student organizations. Dozens of students painted reusable tote bags under a shaded tent while others stopped by booths for giveaways and information on how to live more sustainably.
“It’s just a chill thing to do,” Emily Robinson, assistant director of service and leadership, said about the bag-painting activity. “People can hang out with their friends, paint something they’ll actually use, and feel like they’re part of something.”
Robinson said the reusable bags came back with an upgrade.
“We got a lot of good feedback on the bag painting, but people said they wanted a better design to start with,” she said. “So, this year we gave them a more Earth-themed design that everyone gets a chance to make their own. It turned out way better.”
Environmental groups from across the region also took part in the event. Representatives from Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center offered information on native plants and upcoming community programs, while members of the Orange Chapter of the Sierra Club talked to students about local conservation efforts and how to get involved.
Student organizations used the event to share sustainability-focused research and initiatives happening on campus.
New this year was an added focus on community resources. The LU Sustainability Committee invited local agencies to provide information on free services such as energy assistance, weatherization programs, and food access.
“We wanted to bring in partners who offer real help to people in our area,” Marilyn Guidry, assistant director of research and data management at Center for Resiliency said. “Sustainability isn’t just about the environment—it’s about people. When we connect students with these kinds of resources, we’re building a stronger, more resilient community.”
Students interested in getting more involved with sustainability on campus can join the LU Green Squad or volunteer with the Sustainability Committee. More information is available at lamar.edu/sustainability/volunteer.
