After taking part in hearing screenings during the Texas Special Olympics, Lindsey Sanford, Valerie Valdez, Desiree Cooper, Kelsey Spencer and Sierra Hunnicutt, doctoral audiology students in the Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences, have been invited to volunteer at the Special Olympics in Berlin, Germany in June of 2023.
Earlier this year, the students took part in hearing screenings at the Texas Special Olympics as part of their “Healthy Athletes” program. Since 1997, the program has offered training to health professionals and students to treat people with intellectual disabilities.
“This was such a positive experience for us, which prompted us to want to volunteer at the international level,” said Sanford.
After going through the application process and being accepted, the group has launched a to the public for assistance in travel and living expenses.
“After being accepted to participate in the games in June of 2023, we are trying to raise funds to help with travel, allowing us to volunteer,” added Sanford. “Your donations will be used to fund our flights and accommodations while staying in Berlin. The funds will be split equally among the five of us who were accepted to attend. In the event we do not raise enough money for the trip, all donations will be refunded. We thank you for any consideration or support you may bring us.”
