LU Women in STEM to host STEM Panel

In an effort to highlight the success of women in STEM fields, LU Women in STEM is hosting a panel discussion where guest panelists from a variety of STEM fields will meet with aspiring female STEM professionals to share their perspectives and experiences from the industry.

Founded in spring 2021, this event is the first of its kind for LUWS, but the student organization hopes to establish the panel as an annual event. lu-women-in-stem

“Our hope is that the panelists are able to answer the questions that STEM majors may have about the future,” said Britney Brevell, organization president and junior biology pre-med major. “It’s a great way for students to reach out to professionals that have experienced common struggles and made it through.”

The panel is set to take place on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m.  in the Setzer Student Center Live Oak Ballroom 110A. Guest Panelists include Dr. Ashwini Kucknoor, associate professor of Biology and LUWS Sponsor, Cherie Stanley from the field of technology, Ashley Gibson, production engineer and Jillian Hamilton, calculus instructor at Port Neches-Groves High School.

Future projects from LUWS include a self-defense class for LU students and a collaboration with LU Engineers Without Borders for a service project that involves upgrading the playground at the Shorkey Center of Beaumont.

“My advice for women pursuing a STEM degree is to stay strong,” Brevell said. “Always know that you can look to your fellow women in STEM for support along the way. The path may be difficult, but attaining your degree is a great reward.”
