January 10, 1901 is likely the most important day in Beaumont history, and Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown invites the community to celebrate the day free of charge.
In 1901, the Hamill Brothers brought in the first gusher of oil that lasted nine days. Known as the Lucas Gusher, this feat is celebrated every year on the second Saturday of January at Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum. The celebration falls on January 9 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. And this year, thanks to a donation by ExxonMobil, the people of Southeast Texas can attend for free.
“If you have never celebrated this great event with us, this is your chance,” said Director Troy Gray. “Visitors can expect fun and enjoyment all day long.”
Come for the day and enjoy the musical entertainment of barbershop quartet, Harmony Exporters, as well as re-enactments of the drillers on the oil field and people in town by the Big Thicket Outlaws. Take pictures with the reenactors after every skit.
The War Wagon Cigar Lounge and demonstrations of blacksmithing and printmaking will transport visitors to 1901. Also, the Beaumont Amateur Radio Club will showecase their hobby. Families can partake in crafts and games from 1901 that include the game of graces, derrick toss and more. The Lucas Gusher’s re-enactments will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Beaumont Lions Club will be selling food.
All visitors wearing 1901-era costumes will receive 10% off when they shop in the museum's gift shop.
