TLS Version on Web Browsers
Legacy web browsers use out-of-date protocols that do not support modern encryption and contain security vulnerabilities that threat actors can exploit. University services, like many other popular websites, will only be accessible via modern web browsers that support versions 1.2 or 1.3 of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol.
The following operating systems and browsers do not support TLS 1.2 and higher:
- Android version 4.3 and earlier versions
- Firefox version 5.0 and earlier versions
- Internet Explorer versions 8-10 on Windows 7 and earlier versions
- Internet Explorer 10 on Windows Phone 8.0
- Safari 6.0.4 on OS X 10.8.4 and earlier versions
Use the steps below to ensure your web browser supports TLS 1.2 and above.
Check Your Web Browser
Microsoft Edge
TLS 1.2 is automatically enabled in all versions of Microsoft Edge.
Google Chrome
TLS 1.2 is automatically enabled in Google Chrome version 29 or greater.
.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer.
- From the menu bar, click Tools, then Internet Options, then click the Advanced tab.
- Scroll down to the Security category and verify the only TLS-related box checked is Use TLS 1.2
- Click OK.
- Close your browser and restart Internet Explorer if changes were made.
Apple Safari
TLS 1.2 is automatically enabled in Safari version 7 or greater.
.
Mozilla Firefox
TLS 1.2 is automatically enabled in Firefox version 27 or greater.
.
To check your current TLS settings:
- Open Firefox
- In the address bar, type about:config and press Enter.
- In the Search field, enter tls and find the entry for security.tls.version.min.
- The integer value should be set to 3 for the minimum protocol of TLS 1.2
- Close your browser and restart Mozilla Firefox if changes were made.
