Deaf Education M.S.

Our Master of Science in deaf education is a teacher training program that is certified by the (CED). Our graduates are eligible for professional certification through CED. Graduates may also apply for state licensure as a teacher of Deaf/hard of hearing students in early childhood through 12th grade.

The M.S. in deaf education is now located in Austin at Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) and the program offers classes on TSD campus.

Our program welcomes Deaf and hearing graduate students. Since our inception, we have supported and advocated for Deaf teachers in the classroom. Visit LU's Accessibility Resource Center website for information on support services.

Program Requirements

Maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the master's program.
A minimum of 36 hours are required for graduation. Additional courses may be required for certification as per candidate specialization.

Graduate students are required to be fluent in American Sign Language and must complete a minimum of 12 weeks of supervised student teaching in deaf education within the state of Texas.

Admission Requirements

Complete admissions application online through the Apply Texas (Visit LU's graduate admissions website for additional information.)
Submit official transcripts from each college or university attended, including the accredited institution from which the applicant has earned a bachelor's degree.
A GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.
Take the GRE. Applicants must meet the admission standard according to the formula (GPA X 50) + (GRE Verbal+Quantitative) is equal or greater than 428. The GRE is offered through the LU Career and Testing Center. All applicants must have the Educational Testing Service submit GRE scores directly to 91��̳.
Provide evidence of American Sign Language competency based on the ASL-PI.
Provide three letters of support.
Complete an interview with DSDE faculty.

Common Questions About the Deaf Education M.S.

How long will it take me to graduate?
The M.S. program in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education is designed to be completed within 2 years, which includes coursework plus student teaching.
What are other coursework is required for certification?
Texas Education Agency, our certification agency, requires teachers to have a set of five pedagogy courses plus Internship or Clinical teaching.

These courses are in addition to the 36 hours of deaf education coursework.

On what days and at what times do classes typically meet?
Classes meet on:
- Fridays from 1-5 p.m. and 6-1 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Summer Session

The summer sessions begin mid-June and end mid-August (2 summer sessions). meeting dates and times vary depending on the courses. Summer classes are Monday through Friday.
Does the Masters in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education program ensure that I will get a license as a teacher for deaf students?
Aside from completing all coursework, students must also pass the required TExES certification tests.
What are the state tests that I must take to get a Texas Teachers License in Deaf Education?
Before student teaching or Internship, students are required to take the following tests:
1. Professional Pedagogy and Responsibility Test (PPR)
2. Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TExES)
3. Texas Assessment of Sign Communication (TASC)
4. A content area test (i.e., EC-6, 4-8 math, social studies, science, etc.)
5. The Science of Teaching Reading Exam (STR)
Do you have an online program?
No. Currently, we only offer a hybrid program with 6 face-to-face meetings on campus during the weekends with online support.
