91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳

Are One of These Student Organizations Your Perfect Match?

Rock Climber

Whether you’re a seasoned Cardinal or brand new at 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳, you’ve probably seen many of the student organizations that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has to offer you. From Fraternities and Sororities to the Honors Student Association and Intramural Sports, there are plenty of interest groups and organizations to get involved with on campus.

With so many options to keep track of, however, there are plenty of student organizations on campus that you probably haven’t heard about, and these are some of the best ones that we found.

Nerfers of Lamar

Yes, you read that right. Get in touch with your inner child and take part in a wildly entertaining Nerf War! It doesn’t matter if you’re stressed, or just plain bored, the Nerfers of Lamar are more than willing to show you a good-ole time while you compete against your peers in a foam flinging fight.

This group is a brand-new student organization seeking to have some weekly fun. You can catch them every Friday on the Dining Hall lawn from 4:30-6:30 p.m. (that’s 16:30 to 18:30 hours, in Nerfer language). No Nerf gun? No problem! It’s preferable that you show up with your own equipment and ammo, but if not, just bring your student ID and they’ll provide you with the proper equipment.*

Texas Association of the College of Sports Medicine (TACSM) Quizbowl

What a mouthful, right? If you think that was difficult, try saying some of the words (and learning some of the concepts) that these guys and girls have tucked away in their heads. Each spring semester, the TACSM Quizbowl team travels off to another university in the state of Texas to compete in a Jeopardy-style game against schools like UT, A&M, Texas Tech, UNT, and many, many more!

While at competition, the competitors (most of whom are exercise science and fitness management majors) are asked questions over a variety of topics that can range from nutrition to cardiopulmonary physiology, to electrocardiography. Oh, and did we mention that, just a few years back, they won it all? #PeckEm

Outdoor Pursuits

If you’re not a rec center regular then you might’ve missed Outdoor Pursuits on campus. They’re known for their adventurous trips, rock climbing, and team building. Take a trip into the rec and let them help you climb the rock wall, or get a group of friends together for one of their crate stacking competitions at the indoor soccer field.

If mixing the outdoors with adventure isn’t your thing, believe it or not, you can still participate. Take a pause from reality when you swing by one of Outdoor Pursuits’ hammock setups. You can catch them between the Dining Hall Lawn and Cherry engineering building, beneath the walkway. It’s a great opportunity to detox from all of your homework.

Natural Vanity

What is Natural Vanity all about? Natural hair! This group was created on campus to educate and inspire those “who are interested in natural hair, beauty, living a healthy lifestyle and self-love.”

The people in charge of this group do an excellent job of furthering their cause on campus, but they top the list for another reason as well!

Natural Vanity is NOT afraid to get their hands dirty with some volunteer work! The organization volunteers regularly for 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ events, frequently sacrificing their time for the good of the community. The results? They not only create a positive self-image for themselves, but for 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ students as a whole.

Cardinal Activities Board (CAB)

While not a student organization, because it is largely run with the aid of students here at LU, we couldn’t help but give The Cardinal Activities Board a shout-out (and a healthy amount of applause!).

While you may not have officially heard of CAB, there is no doubt that you’ve seen or interacted with them on campus. If you’ve ever attended an event for Week of Welcome, Homecoming Week, Big Red Mania, The Big Event, or a Finals Week Stress Reliever, then you’ve seen CAB in action.

This group works day in, day out to make student life at LU more enjoyable for everyone on campus. Whether you’re a new, international, commuter, or on-campus student the Cardinal Activities Board is determined to make your college experience the best. Thank them by swinging through and participating the next time you see an event on campus!

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Ambassadors

You can easily spot an ambassador on duty by their signature red coats, though, it’s likely that you’ve already met at least one of them in class.

The 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Ambassadors are a group of diverse campus leaders who officially represent LU. Managed by the office of Alumni Affairs, this prestigious group has limited membership openings and requires an application and interview process to get in.

The ambassadors promote service to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳, and service to the community, by representing the LU student body at official events. They do their best to promote university pride among everyone they encounter, from prospective students to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Alumni and Southeast Texas community members. Applications are currently being accepted for new ambassadors.

Ultimate Frisbee Team

Looking to add some competition to your weekly routine? Look no further than LU’s Ultimate Frisbee Team.

They play every Monday and Thursday night at Ty Tyrell track, located next to the Rec Center. Catch them out there for a good time and learn all about hammers, scoobers, thumbers, blades, and overhands (don’t worry, they’ll tell you all about it).

On some weekends, you’ll find them attending, or hosting, state tournaments. Don’t be shy! It’s a blast and the more people who participate, the better.

Knights of Columbus

No, they don’t wear chain link or plated armor. Sorry if that’s a disappointment!

This Catholic men’s fraternity was founded in 1882 and still thrives today. It’s members focus mainly on community service and they collect plenty of hours each semester - the council at LU has won their fair share of awards.

Since getting their charter from the national Knights of Columbus organization, the group has won multiple recruitment awards, including a highly-coveted star council award, within the national organization. You can expect for the Knights of Columbus and its members to continue growing and making an impact throughout 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ and it's surrounding community.

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Dance Marathon

It’s ‘For The Kids!’ as they say!

A new student organization at 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳, the Dance Marathon team is solely dedicated to raising funds for our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (Christus St. Elizabeth and Jasper Memorial Hospitals) to help them fight pediatric illness.

What’s that have to do with dancing? They’re glad you asked…

When all is said, and done, and the money has been raised, this organization throws a big dance party where you can go to eat, play games, win prizes and, of course, dance. Don’t worry, about your skill level - it’s all about the fun and the cause. In 2017, they raised $4,730.00 for the kids and they are determined to increase that to $10,000.00 for their next event.

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Collegiate Archers

You may have missed them on campus...but you can be sure that they don't miss their targets. In fact, your 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Collegiate Archers are National Champions.

New to archery? This group coaches all experience levels. Just fill out the waiver form and show up to practice. Or, feel free to just stop by and watch. You can find them in the rec, on Mondays, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., diligently practicing for their competitions. Their talent is impressive - and obviously unmatched.
